ReBoot Refresh and ReNew

After the month I have had trying to get back into the groove of things again after my infusion I have majorly slacked on my blog. (little reminder RA totally SUCKS!!) In the next week or so I will be rebooting, refreshing and renewing including my blog. There will be some changes and things may be out of order for a bit. Just sit tight and this headache will be eased back into a nice comfy wiggling flow.

Chicken and stuffing

So it got a wee bit chilly here the last few evenings.  The days are still nice and sunny but it does get about 45-50 at night.  I don’t like to turn on the heat unless I have to since it gets so dry in here. I’ll just grab a sweater and snuggle in. Since my RA has been on overdrive these past 2 weeks I decided to make dinner in the crock again.  Did I mention I am loving my crock LOVING! I was looking in my pantry and realized I have everything I need for Chicken and Stuffing. So that’s perfect.  Here’s my simple and easy crockpot chicken and stuffing recipe.

Ingredients:

  • 4-5 Chicken Breasts (boneless/skinless thawed)
  • 1 c Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
  • 2 cans Cream of Mushroom Soup
  •  1/4 c Milk
  • 1 pk dry stuffing mix
  • 1 stick butter
  • Broccoli – optional

Place chicken breast in crockpot.

2015-01-19 13.06.08

Top with 1 c Shredded Mozzarella Cheese.

2015-01-19 13.13.38

Mix 2 cans Cream of Mushroom Soup and 1/4 c Milk

2015-01-19 13.06.32

2015-01-19 13.11.44

2015-01-19 13.14.03

Pour over chicken and cheese.

2015-01-19 15.42.27

Sprinkle 1 pk dry stuffing mix over chicken.

2015-01-19 15.44.42

Melt 1 stick butter in microwave in 30 sec increments and drizzle over stuffing mix.

2015-01-19 15.47.43

Cook 6 hours on low or 3-4 hours high

2015-01-19 15.44.14

You can then serve it with a side of steamed broccoli and eat. Tasty.

Food.  I have always loved food.  Yet I am not a big eater.  I love the taste of food and I savor it while I eat it.  I then stop eating when I am almost full.  And that is why I always have room for some sort of dessert. My son’s great great gramma told me once that she always ate dessert first.  That way she would always have room for it.  A sneakily brilliant plan.  I tried it and it was amazing to not be full for dessert but…my food just didn’t thrill me as much. I tell people that there is a secret compartment that is always ready for dessert.  I can be completely full from dinner. I make all the oh I’m so full noises and unbutton the pants (luckily I usually wear yoga pants now).  BUT I will still have room for dessert 9 out of 10 times.  I will not always have dessert but I could if I craved some.  One of my favorite dessert is as I have mentioned before cheesecake. I also Love smoothies.  I make them with all sorts of healthy goodness for the morning, but sometimes I want a more desserty one.

Enter the NUTRI-BULLET YAY!

It comes with (well mine did anyways)…

The Power Base – powerful 600 WATT, High-Torque Power Base. You just press down with cup and it does the rest.

Extractor Blade – break through tough seeds, thick stems and tough skin to access the hidden nutrition inside

The Flat Blade is ideal for milling grains, grinding fresh herbs and chopping nuts

1 -24 oz tall cup – Main cup for making larger batches

2 – 18 oz short cups one with handle and one without

2 – Resealable Lids

1 – Handled Comfort Lip Ring

1 – Comfort Lip Ring

and the recipes and nutrition guides

Some of the benefits

  • 600-watt motor
  • Pulverizes fruits and vegetables
  • Patented blade design with Cyclonic action and High-torque power
  • Clean-up is a breeze
  • Multiple cups and lids
  • Healthy and Delicious drinks that you can modify to your tastes

Here are some Recipes from their site.  I have my own fave recipe that I make that IMHO is a powerhouse for RA relief (maybe its just in my head but its real yummy) Maybe I’ll post those some time.

I have made tons of smoothies in it and ground up some grains and it worked beautifully. Sometimes I have to shake the base a little to get it to grab the food but them it blends nicely.

My only negative to this is at first it smelled like burnt rubber but it did go away and the notches you set the cup in before locking it into place sticks sometimes.  Which for this girl with hand issues really sucks. I have to use my go to body part for leverage (my forearm)

My Say So: I am not a sponsor or being paid for this review.  I just love it and it make my life easier so this is my honest opinion. I bought mine at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon.

Take 200 and Call Me in Morning

The last week and a half I have been in pretty bad sorts.  I can tell it is time for another round of meds.  I wake up most mornings wishing everything I had to do for the day could be done in my mind. Well actually that would be great even when I am feeling good.  Telekinetic house cleaning, bill paying, errand running, dinner cooking, grocery shopping.  Then teleport what ever I needed directly to me.  HECK YA! My hands don’t work, my knees are swollen and my shoulders! Oh my freaking shoulders. Rock tumbling time.  You would think that I have the smoothest shiniest shoulder joints. Nice beautiful Diamonds in there.

Now I am a fighter and I won’t just stay laying down (in bed). I have people to do, places to see, things to go!  No that’s not right, heehee. I have people to see, places to go, things lots of things to do before I rest!  I have called my Drs 3x to let them know that its been almost 5 months since my infusion and my body is worn out. Finally I spoke to them and my auth is still pending.  Fingers crossed it gets done for the next round. I was asked by one of you sweet people what I do and take to get through.  I have tried to live a healthful life.  Yes I still eat some junk and my sweets and oh the salty goodness.  I am in enough pain aren’t I? And I tried my best to stay fit. Exercise when I can endure it and turn even brushing my teach into a squat challenge. (Oh my! Haha this is what that one sentence looked like before I reread it — Yes I still eat some hunk and my sweety and oh the salty goodness. WTH! TMI right? Bahaha)

So I have this handy dandy pill organizer that I fill every Sunday.  I fill it from my mini pharmacy in my closet. Everything is to make my decease and ailments more tolerable. Sheesh. So here is my list of RA/Lupus poppers.

Methrotrexate 2.5 mg – 4 once a week (I usually take them on Saturday night before I go to bed. It should be 7 but I can’t tolerate that many quite yet) Methotrexate is is a chemotherapy drug used to relieve joint pain and other symptoms.

Folic Acid 1 mg – 1 per day on days I don’t take methotrexate. It helps with the side effects caused by methotrexate

Predinisone 5 mg – 1.5 per day – it is a corticosteroid and used as an anti-inflammatory (I usually only take it when I am really inflamed or a serious flare because of the side effects.)

Plaquenil 200 mg – 1 per day – used as anti-malarial drug but also for lupus and RA

Omeprazole/Prilosec 20 mg – 1 per day –  is used to treat certain esophagus and stomach problems (such as ulcers, heartburn and acid reflux caused by some of the other meds listed above)

acetaminophen-Codeine No.3 30 mg – as needed – Pain reliever (I have only taken it about 5 times in the last year cause I really don’t like pain pills or the way they make me feel.)

ALSO for my thyroid

Levothyroxine 175 mg – 1 per day – used to treat an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)

Supplements/Vitamins – **

Vitamin D – 1000

Prenatal Vitamin – NO I am NOT preggers.  My Dr prescribes it to me for the multi and for the dosage of Iron which I am needing.

Calcium – 500 mg – Daily helps with keeping my bones strong

Turmeric – 300mg and Bromelain – 150 mg – Daily for a natural way to that might help to reduce inflammation {bromelain is found naturally in pineapple}

Flax Seed Oil(Omega 3) – 1000 mg Every other day

Ginger Rhizone Extract – 125 mg – Daily can help with RA symptoms and stomach issues. Does it? I don’t know but its pretty safe so why not! Just be careful if you take it cause it can cause a little gas and heartburn.

Thanks and I hope this helps you get a better understanding of what a typical day looks like for me.

**This is my own personal list of medications and vitamins I take and should not be a basis for what should or should not be taken by any other person. YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SPEAK WITH A HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONAL BEFORE TAKING ANY DIETARY, NUTRITIONAL, HERBAL OR HOMEOPATHIC SUPPLEMENT

My Mom’s Surgery

Today is National Measure Your Feet Day!  So I decided to wait until today to post my Take 2 Thursday.  Yesterday I went with my mom for her pre-op Dr appt.  She is going to be having surgery on both her feet.  Next month it will be her left foot only. She has planter fasciitis and bone spurs, but most serious is the  severe Retrocalcaneal bursitis.  So the doctor has to perform on left achilles tendon secondary repair with re-attachment to calcaneous, partial excision calcaneous, gastrocnemius lengthening.  Say what now?

So we went to Dr and we bombarded him with Q’s.

  1.  how long will the surgery take – 1 hr with general anesthesia
  2. where will you be cutting – the tendon in calf and opening up heel, reshaping heel and closing it back up
  3. how long will the cast be on for – splint for 2 weeks, cast for 4 weeks and walking boot until its healed
  4. how much pain will there be – don’t worry I’ll give you a prescription for painkillers
  5. How long until it is all better – but the scar should be completely matured in 12 – 18 months
  6. when will the surgery on the right foot be – about 4-6 months or when feeling up to it
  7. will my mom be able to go skiing – if she could before she could again (alas she couldn’t before)

And a few others…

I am going to be hanging over at her house trying my best to take care of her.  I am so nervous for my mom, but I’m sure my nervousness doesn’t even come close to hers.  She is a strong-willed woman and I’m sure she will be up and at em in no time.  I need some positive energy flowing through me so I can be the supportive rock that she is going to need.

What a Crock!

So I got a Crock pot for Christmas this year and I have gone a bit crazy with trying all sorts of recipes in it.  I have loved loved it so much. It’s a 6-quart capacity Countdown Digital Slow Cooker with a BONUS 16-ounce Little Dipper Warmer which is perfect for heating up dips.  Which is what I am going to do tonight when I have a couple of friends coming by later tonight. I have made half a dozen recipes so far and I will be posting those recipes soon.  Today is Hot Head Chili Day so tonight I want to make a chili recipe that I have been making in a regular stock pot.  I can’t wait to see how it is with the crock pot. I will hopefully post the recipe on Tuesday. So far I have made a chicken corn chowder, chicken enchilada soup, apple crisp, slow cooked chicken for tacos and chicken and stuffing.  The chicken comes out so freaking tender. The first time I used it there was this horrible metallic burning smell and it freaked me out. I kept going and checking it.  I found out its normal the first time or two you use it. By the 3rd time I didn’t smell anything but the yummy smell of chicken enchilada soup.

th

My Say So – So far this Crock pot as been a huge win for me and I foresee many more recipes ideas and meals being made in this thing.

Humpty Dumpty

I was broken.

Who could possibly love this? I don’t want to be a burden. I decided it was OK to be alone.  I was all set to get a bunch of cats and start watching those daytime “stories”. How could I find someone who would want to be with an old achy woman in a  youngish womans body? I cut off any possibilities to a long-lasting relationship. My last relationship was what I needed when I needed someone to care about me, but I became a burden. In the mean time I got this decease and as it progressed so did the subtle resentment.  I don’t think he even realized it.  When I brought it to his attention he would tell me he loved me no matter what. I slowly became a burden and he got miserable and moody all the time.  I sucked it up and hid my sadness and pain.  I went out when I hurt too bad to, I stopped asking for help and I resented this damn decease.

I went to visit my mom march 2013 and I had 2 devastating life changing medical occurrences.  A finally fell apart and broke completely.  I became sad all the time.  I needed time to heal and he wasn’t willing to give it to me.  He gave me an ultimatum that I either come home now or don’t come home at all.  I was in no condition to go back yet and he wouldn’t listen or understand.  He already resented me and would never love who i am now, broken.  I couldn’t give him the life he wanted, or the kids he wanted.

I was humpty dumpty and I couldn’t be put back together. Fast forward. With the support of my mom and son I was able to pick myself up and put myself back together.  Only I can lift myself back up on that wall again. It is still hard and after the trials I have been through lately it is a constant push.  I am so thankful for the small yet powerful support group I have now.

I may still have broken parts and will never be “whole” again, but I won’t stop trying NOT to fall of my wall.  My son and I made a painful and the hardest decision we ever had to make on our own, we are better for it now.  I now know I am pretty darn lovable and I will not let this crush me again. I may not have the strength to physically do the things I used to but I am a HELL of a lot stronger NOW than I ever was. And I am loved. Imperfections, ailments, decease and all.

Wash and Go

About a year ago I decided to try my hands at some homemade natural products.  My first one was a laundry detergent.  It is the powder kind.  I made my first batch in January 2014 and I am finally ready to make a new batch of laundry detergent.  For my family it works great our clothes come out clean and I have my own softener crystals I make to help with smells and softening clothes.  I am not quite out of that yet but I will give a DIY on those soon. It cost me about  $12 for all the supplies and I haven’t bought any detergent in over a year.  Now this is for 2 people with about 4-5 loads a week. Why so many you may ask- well we like to wash all towels and sheets every week in this house.

It is really simple and you can get all the ingredients from your local Walmart or Target.

1 box – Borax  $8 – boosts cleaning power and gets rid of odors

20 Mule Team Borax

1 box – Washing Soda  $3  – powerful cleaner and busts through grease and stains

2015-01-12 17.32.35

2 cups – Baking Soda  $1 inexpensive way to boost detergent and bleach performance, soften clothes

2015-01-12 17.32.48

Mix them all together and put into a container or jar with an old coffee scoop or table spoon measuring spoon.2015-01-12 17.33.38

Makes about 18-19 cups worth

 2015-01-12 17.34.25

Wash, Rinse, Repeat as needed!  That’s it.  I only need to use 2T for a full load of laundry but depending on how dirty the clothes are up to 1/4 cup.

Savings in my opinion are about $100+ per year!  What do you have to lose (besides dirt)?

Sign Sign Everywhere a Sign

This past week I was learning ASL  American Sign Language.  It was incredibly enjoyable.  I did have a hard time moving my wrists properly but I think I learned and can sign the most common signs.

signlanguageabc

ASL started as a language in the American School for the Deaf (ASD), founded in Hartford, Connecticut in 1817. The school was known as The American Asylum, At Hartford, For The Education And Instruction Of The Deaf And Dumb.  The founder was a Yale graduate and divinity student named Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.

When I was a child I had a hard time hearing.  I couldn’t hear the whispers or quiet sounds around me.  I went to the Ear specialist and they were concerned I might be going deaf.  One doctor said that we just had to wait it out and hopefully it was growing pains.  They wanted to wait and see if I would grow out of it.  For the most part I did.  I can hear better now, but I have extremely sensitive ear drums. I met a girl who was completely deaf who lived a town over and we became friends.  She tried to teach some basic signs but she was a kid and I was a kid. We weren’t very good at teaching and learning from each other.

This week I learned a new sets of words each day. I used the site by Bill Vicars called Lifeprint.

Sunday – Numbers  1-1011-20  /  21-30  /  31-40 and  Alphabet

Monday – Familymom, dad, boy-girl, marriage, brother-sister, grandpa-grandma, aunt-uncle, baby, single, divorced-separate  Animalscat, dog, bird, horse, cow, sheep, pig, bug

Tuesday – Colorsblue, green, yellow, red, brown, orange, gold & silver  Clothesshirt, pants, socks, shoes, coat, underwear

Wednesday – Placeshome, work, school, store, church, come-go, car/drive, in-out, with  Requestsplease, excuse, thank you, help, who, what, when, where, why, how, stop

Thursday –  Foodpizza, milk, hamburger, hot dog, egg, apple, cheese, drink, spoon, fork, cup, cereal, water, candy, cookie, hungry   Temperaturehot, cold

Friday – Amountsbig, tall, full, more  Moneydollars, cents, cost  Timeday, night, week, month, year, will-(future), before-(in the past), today-(now), finish-(“all done!”)

Saturday – Healthwash, hurt, bathroom, brush teeth, sleep, nice/clean  Feelingshappy, angry, sad, sorry, cry, like, good-bad, love

I am going to continue learning a new sign everyday going forward and take a few minutes to refresh will I sit and watch TV or go to the bathroom. What else do I have to do while sitting on my throne?
