This past week I have been playing Blackjack. I wanted to learn the ins and outs of this classic card game. I have played it many time in the past with the basic hit me and stay knowledge of getting to 21. About 13 years ago I went to Las Vegas when we came out to Cali to visit my mom. I had about $200 left over from playing Craps. We were on our way out when my son’s dad and my step dad decided they weren’t done yet. This guy at a blackjack table asked if I wanted to sit down. I told him that I didn’t know how to play for reals. He said its ok I can teach you. He asked everyone at the table and even the dealer agreed. I sat down and got a crash test learning experience. I didn’t really get to know why I was doing the things he was telling me to do, but I was winning so I didn’t care. 40 min later my mom called letting me know my son woke up and was asking for me so I had to go. I went back to the motor home with $320. Not too bad when I started with $100. My son’s dad on the other hand started with $700 and won $1400 and Left with less that $100.
I vowed that one day I would learn what all that technical “whats” meant.
What is black jack or Natural – total of 21 in your first two cards, an Ace and any ten-valued card and pays 3 to 2
What is doubling down – Doubling down allows you to double your bet and receive one (and only one) additional card to your hand (A good example is when you hold a 6 and a 5 against a dealer’s upcard of 5. You have a good odds of winning the hand by drawing one additional card, so you could increase your bet by doubling down)
What is splitting – When you are dealt a pair of cards of the same rank, you can split the pair into two separate hands and play them each by their self (If you split a pair of Aces for example, and then draw a ten-valued card on one of the Aces, this is not a blackjack, but rather a total of 21).
When you hit – draw another card to the hand to continue to try for 21 or have the highest total
When you stand – stop at the current total, you cannot take any more cards
What is a bust – If you draw a card that makes your hand total go over 21
When do you win – your total is higher than the dealer without busting, you win the bet
What is a push – you and the dealer tie, both have the same exact total
When the dealer hits – He must draw cards until he has a total of 17 or more. The dealer has no choice. He must continue taking cards until his total is at least 17.
What is insurance – Insurance is a bet that is available only when the dealer’s upcard is an Ace. When the dealer turns up an Ace, they offer insurance to the players. The dealer checks to see if they have Blackjack it protects your original bet against the dealers blackjack. If the dealer does not have blackjack, you’ll lose the insurance bet, AND still have to play the original bet out. (Insurance is still a little weird to me and I just skip it all together, but that’s just me-an amateur)
There are other rules to the game if you want to get more in-depth, but these are the basics to playing at a casino. I will just play my blackjack app on my tablet for awhile. At least I know more and can hold my own for a bit so SIRA!!
